Gundappa Ranganath Viswanath, the former Indian cricketer, is a name that will forever be remembered in the annals of Indian cricket history. Born on February 12, 1949, in Bangalore, India, Viswanath was a maestro with elegant strokeplay and exquisite timing.

Making his debut in Test cricket against Australia in 1969, Viswanath went on to play 91 Tests for India, amassing an impressive 6,080 runs at an average of 41.93. One of his most memorable innings was against the formidable West Indies in 1971, where he displayed his sheer brilliance by scoring a match-winning century in difficult conditions.

Viswanath also became the first Indian to score over 4,000 runs in Test cricket, marking his name in the record books. In addition to his Test career, he represented India in 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs), scoring 439 runs at an average of 27.43.

The elegant right-hander was known for his ability to perform under pressure and his resilience in tough situations. Renowned for his technique, he was often compared to the legendary batsman Vivian Richards.

After retiring from cricket, Viswanath ventured into match refereeing and held administrative roles in Indian cricket. His contributions to the sport were duly recognized when he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors, in 1980.
