About Sonetta Duncan
Sonetta Duncan (born: Stephanie Nicole Duncan) is a Scottish-Canadian producer, screenwriter, and director. She was raised in Aurora, Ontario, a historic district older than Canada itself.A lover of tradition, philosophy, and art, Sonetta has always claimed to be a seeker of truth. Her first true loves were theatre and literature; performing since the age of six, and a self-taught author of poetry and prose shortly thereafter. With a keen motivation to make a difference in the world, cinema seemed like the obvious choice for her to realize her destiny.Believing deeply in art's power to change the world, she pursued her passion for cinema in post-secondary, graduating from York University's BFA of Film Production in 2016.Between 2012 to 2016, she worked as York University's Communication & Public Affairs' videographer and editor. In 2015, she was selected by the Chinese Government and Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture to create a short documentary in Kaifeng, the capital of China's Song Dynasty, to promote the exchange of culture internationally. Later that year, she began to work as a producer, actress, and screenwriter for the Toronto-based film production company, Lightwork Films.Her work is highly experimental and philosophical (borderline art house), influenced significantly by foreign films, and often combines mixed-media to properly convey her themes and messages in unique and abstract ways. She is a lover of old-school cinema and often shoots on film, personally hand-processing and digitizing the footage to deepen her connection to the work. She believes that artists are vessels, and that the art created should be allowed space to breathe and become that which it is meant to.She is a member of the Women in Film & Television in Toronto (WIFT-T), the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)....
