About Ron Gilbert
Ron Gilbert's dad was a Russian Jew who migrated to the USA in 1919. His mom was a first generation Italian American. He was born in East Harlem (104 Street and 1st Avenue)in Manhattan and attended St Lucy's Parochial School where he was an altar boy. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx where he excelled in Track and football. After that had a scholarship to CCNY, where he boxed and wrestled.US Army heavyweight boxing champion in Fort Jackson,South Carolina He was always interested in acting and after his stint in US Army, he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. After that he studied with Lee Strasberg is a lifetime member at the Actors Studio. He was married to Catherine Dickhaus for 3 years and has 2 children, Adam Frank and Lauren Snow. He has one other daughter Lea Norin, He also has 4 grandchildren Chase and Enzo (Adam's children) and Jack Snow and Alice(Lauren Snow's children). His son Adam who died in 2005 from a head injury He works out at Muscle Beach in Venice and usually rides his bike or motorcycle there.::Anonymous
Ron Gilbert was born in East Harlem New York during the gangs era and was involved in a few gangs who really wanted the defend their streets and neighborhood. He was a young member of the Hawks and they loved to play softball, stick ball and stoop ball. Lots of street activities plus opening up the fire hydrant during the hot summer days. The local swimming pool was only 12 blocks away in Jefferson park. He was raised in a very Italian family tradition and would make wine and sausage with grandfather Francesco Adamo. At the age of 12 years he was influenced by Olympic athlete Bob Mathias and also Jim Thorpe and joined the track team at Cardinal Hayes High School and later became a football player . A friend of his sister Denise told him to learn how to box and he to at age 14 years old and it was very helpful in the environment he was raised in . In addition when he was asked by his friend AL Buzzetti to start a ending machine business which included peanut and candy machines in bars, restaurants and grocery stores all over Harlem. One of the bars was Knobby's which was Al Pacino's uncle.. Athletics as a very strong part of his life growing up. He also was an excellent swimmer and was a lifeguard at the age of 14 and became an official department of Parks life guard for the beaches and pools in NYC. He was the head lifeguard at Shorehaven Beach Club in the Bronx which he met the boxer Jake LaMotta.In the summer of 1960 when he was the head lifeguard at Banner Lode in Connecticut and was drafted by the US Army for basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey where he was a platoon guide. When he was transferred for advance infantry training to Fort Jackson ,South California he was made a platoon guide again. He had to return to boxing so that he could get a 3 day pass to be best man at his friend Al Buzzetti;s wedding. His first opponent was a 6 foot 9 inch fighter and he knocked him out in the 3rd round. Now he was able to attend Al's wedding. He continued to fight and was the heavyweight champion of the Fort Jackson. When he returned to NYC he entered the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and later studied with Phillip Burton's teacher who was Richard Burton at the American and Dramatic Musical Academy in NYC. He later studied with Lee Strasberg and was involved with the Actors Studio which was the mecca of the method in NYC, He started his career on the to stage in NY...
