He took a major in Drama and minor in English literature where he received an award for excellence in the drama program.Byrnell switched schools to Vancouver Institute of Media Arts (formerly the William Davis Centre for Actor's Study) after he was accepted on the spot following his audition with department head Chilton Crane.
